She was awarded the Master’s degree with honor from the London Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and Bachelor’s degree with honor “Cum Laude” from Boston University. She received additional musical training—in subjects including music pedagogy—from London Royal College of Music, Paris Schola Cantorum, and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
Her students have been placed into advanced classes in the competitive New England Conservatory Preparatory School, admitted to schools including San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Harvard University, and have been selected to perform at the White House for the former President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. While recounting the musicianship training, the student stated in her review “Mo Zhao has been one of the best music theory teachers that I have ever had the pleasure of studying with…I sincerely recommend Mo Zhao for anyone who is looking for a skilled piano, composition, and music theory teacher.”
Mo Zhao believes in the combination of passion and discipline in music education. She encourages her students to appreciate the lyricism and details in the music while striving for technical mastery. Furthermore, students are recommended to advance through the Certificated of Merit or ABRSM exams, as well as participating in competitions such as United States Open Piano Competition, Young Pianists’ Beethoven Competition, MTAC Sonata Contest, and the University of the Pacific Zeiter Piano Competition.
As an active composer, Mo Zhao’s music has been performed across the United States, United Kingdom, and Europe in venues including the Barbican Centre, Wigmore Hall, and Saarland State Theatre. Recent performers of her music include the Grammy-nominated string band ETHEL, the EXUADI Vocal Ensemble, Plus-Minus Ensemble, and the Chinese traditional musician HE Tao. She has been invited and participated in music festivals including TUTTI and Women Composers Festival of Hartford. Her composition teachers include Matthew King, Martin Amlin, Brett Abigaña, Narcis Bonet, and Ketty Nez.
Mo Zhao has performed solo piano recitals presented by Sherman Clay. She has studied piano at San Francisco Conservatory of Music with Mack McCray during her undergraduate degree. Outside of traditional classical repertoire, she has also played for musicals, jazz groups, and Afro-Cuban Latin ensembles. With a strong passion for Chinese traditional music, she will research and study Chinese music in the Beijing Central Conservatory of Music in the upcoming year. Mo Zhao offers lessons in both English and Chinese Mandarin.
