Alex Winter

 Alex Winter started cello when he was 8 years old in Davis, CA. As a young student he played in the Sacramento Youth Symphony and was principal cello of his high school orchestra, where he also had the opportunity to play the Saint-Saens Cello Concerto. He received scholarships from the Tamalpais High School Orchestra and the Marin Music Chest.

Alex received his Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance from California State University, Sacramento, where he studied with Andrew Luchansky. He received his Master of Music in Performance at Florida State University, where he attended on assistantship and studied with Gregory Sauer. In college, he performed regularly in numerous ensembles, including a quartet, piano trio, baroque ensembles at CSUS and FSU, and was principal cello of the CSUS and FSU Symphony Orchestras. He also had the privilege of receiving master classes from some great visiting artists, including Gil Kalish, Steven Doane, Amit Peled, and members of the Los Angeles Piano Quartet, Tokyo String Quartet and Alexander String Quartet. In addition, he received scholarships from the Sacramento Saturday Club, Camerata Capistrano, and the A.J. and Susana Watson Chamber Music Competition as a member of the Valhalla String Quartet. He performed the Schumann Cello Concerto with the CSUS Orchestra as winner of the school’s concerto competition. Summer festivals he attended include Quartet Program and Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival.

Professionally, Alex has performed with North State Symphony, Merced Symphony, Tallahassee Symphony, Northwest Florida Symphony, Lake Tahoe Music Festival, and as principal cello with Townsend Opera.
